Five Misperceptions about Worship Part 2
Here are five more misperceptions Christians and Non-Christians have about worship. I will give a short summary about how the Bible addresses these misperceptions.
1. Worship happens in the sanctuary
Worship is not limited to space. Worship is life. We as a community of faith carve out a space every week, though this space is sacred, it is not the only place worship happens. (John 4:21-24).
2. Worship is a department in my life
We cannot departmentalize worship. Worship must affect our whole lives. Because life is worship, if we make worship a department, we run the risk of idolatry. If we cease to see our lives as glorifying God we will glorify something else. (Romans 1:21, 25)
3. Worship is something we created for God
How self centered and arrogant are we when we try to judge what is good worship and what is bad. How frustrated God must be with us when we treat worship as if we created it for God. God does not care what style of music we make to worship Him. If you worship with piano and organ, or with Guitars and drums, with traditional hymns or rock music, give God glory through those things. All things were created for Him, and by Him
(Colossians 1:16)(John 1:3). I urge you not to focus on the means by which we give God glory (2 Samuel 6:16-22) but know that all the glory is His (Romans 11:33-36).
4. Worship is something God needs from us
God does not need our worship. If we do not give Him glory the rocks will (Luke 19:40)
5. Worship makes us look good
Worship should make God look good. We were created to magnify Christ through our very lives, for Christ’s power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) We need to ask one question. Who am I trying to impress? In Worship we should be trying to make God look good. I n our lives we should be magnifying Christ not ourselves. Many times our worship can turn into a process of self glorification. Guard your steps as you enter the House of God (Ecclesiastes 5 :1-2). Our worship should point people to God not to us.
